A few weeks ago we started a count down of things to do in Oklahoma without having to mortgage the family farm. We had a lot of things going on so I was kind of pulled away from this list but like a bad dream…I’m back!! Now the weather is TOO good to pass up. Let’s have budget friendly fun!!
#4 – Historic Ft. Reno
7107 W Cheyenne St in El Reno.
To me this is a no brainer. This is an actual frontier days fort in the heart of Oklahoma. It’s hard to beat the history the old fort offers. Originally established as a cavalry outpost in 1874 and remaining an active military fort until 1947. During World War II the fort was used as a POW base housing German and Italian prisoners from the German Afrika Korps. There were over 200,000 prisoners taken during the battle of North Africa and some were sent Ft Reno.
Now here is the downside. The Fort is a non-profit site. They receive no federal funds!! The fort is free!! They also have a great Museum. Take a couple of bucks and leave them a donation, please. They are working hard to preserve our history. Let’s help them!!
When you go out be sure to take a look at the cemetery. Pretty interesting place. We don’t normally think of German and Italian solders being buried in Oklahoma but they are!!
You might want to make sure you are out by sundown… Rumor has it some of the solders never went home!! (Insert evil laugh) If you are of the brave variety the fort offers a lantern tours!! They will cost you $8.00 but might be worth it!!
Now, Get out there and explore Oklahoma!!!
