So this morning I woke up at 5:15 am and turned on the TV looking for some music video that would inspire me to WANT to get out of bed. Since the name implies they play music I turned the TV over to MTV.
HUGE MISTAKE!! They were airing an episode of “Made”. This 16 year old girl wanted to win the eye of her crush. MTV brings in a style coach and a date coach for the young woman. They figure out she is really into the Japanese anime and comic books.
She was not allowed to talk about the things she liked on dates. Given a complete makeover to make her look “more girly” and even taught how to walk more like a girl. In the end the young man she HAD to ask out turned her down.
What happened to “Keeping it real”?? I mean really!!!
As the father of a beautiful and amazing 12 year old band geek I want nothing but the best for her. But I want her to be HER and be happy with who she is. There is no reason we need to be sending the message to our kids that if you like someone you need to hide or change who you are.
That is so messed up!! What happens to the children when they become adults with this mentality? Let me tell you… Their desire to “keep up” and “fit in” causes them to over spend to keep up with the rest of the country so people will accept them.
We all need to learn to appreciate the beautiful differences that make us all unique and be comfortable in our own skin.
BTW…In the end the young girl went to the prom with a guy that LIKED that she was into the anime and comic books… no thanks to MTV.
