American Dream or Nightmare on Elm St.

Anthony Murray is an NFCC Certified Consumer Credit Counselor and Bankruptcy Services Coordinator at Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Central Oklahoma.

One of the biggest decisions I ever made was buying a house. I really wish I had bought something a little less risky like a loaded gun. In the 9 years the bank owned the home and was nice enough to let me stay there we paid $5000 for a new Heat and Air unit. spent $10k Replacing the roof due to a tornado. $8k fixing the damage the ice storm caused. I never knew a breaker box could be pulled OUT of a house by a falling tree.  The unexpected expenses and worries on top of an ever increasing adjustable rate mortgage made the experience something similar to a root canal with a jack hammer and a narcoleptic dentist.

It is still the American dream to own your own home. Educate yourself to the highs and (OMG) lows of home buying. You really should be a mortgage micro-manager. Watch everything. Don’t go blindly into that big buy. Attend a Home Buyers workshop or a Pre-Purchase class. If you are not sure where to look, CALL US. That is what we are here for. Don’t let your American Dream become an unholy nightmare…
